Concerts @: The music is heating up!

We know you've missed the awesomeness that is live music in Uptown, so we're coming back for yet another Concert @ Quadrangle. Don't worry, to answer your question- we missed you too. Join us on May 14 as we welcome long-time supporters of YnC, Watching Cars.

The brainchild of brothers David and Collin, Watching Cars is a unique blend of homespun roots and understated pop that will have its listener unknowingly whistling melodies the next day. Both boys, Texas born and bred, grew up on a steady diet of Beach Boys, Beatles, Chicago, and James Taylor, paving the way for their love of indie pop artists such as Death Cab for Cutie, Iron & Wine, and Pedro the Lion. Out of influences like these and a rigorous background of classical and jazz training came the duo's characteristic sound.

Watching Cars is a band that consists of brothers Collin and David Gouldin. For years the two enjoyed playing together in the rock band Ben Zephyr and decided that it was time to step out on their own. As David puts it, “there's nothing quite like being in a band with a member of your family. We have this unspoken musical connection between us that I haven't been able to find with anybody else.” With all the chemistry that siblings have, it just made sense that after Ben Zephyr, the two would come back together to work on their own project. The result is a well crafted set of tunes which highlight both the brothers' unspoken musical bond and the quirks of their individual personalities.

We will also be presenting some great information from an amazing organization, CLASP International. A little about them:

C.L.A.S.P. (Connective Link Among Speech-language pathology Program) International is a program that allows certified Speech-Language Pathologists to go into international countries where speech-language pathology is not practiced and provide graduate training to the natives of that country. The goal of the program is to provide self-sustaining programming that allows each country to pass along training to future speech-language pathologists.

As always, the night is free and the food and drinks will be there waiting. We're looking forward to seeing you soon.

Concerts @ Quadrangle: Kirk Part Deux

We're more than ready to welcome back one of YnC's favorites. Kirk Thurmond joined us a few months ago, and since then he tells us there are new songs, a new sound and new band members that are sure to make Friday, March 26 a night you will not want to miss. Come out and join us because you always know we have a great time, and because you love live music and supporting your community. Meet up with old friends, make new ones, and hang out at one of the coolest non-venues in the metroplex- AMLI Quadrangle.

In addition, join us as we welcome artist Bob Johnson to Studio 2717. His work has been described as "inventive" and his unique use of light in all his paintings leaves the viewer wanting desperately to be a part of whatever scene he has created. We are privileged to have his work showing in our gallery and know that you will want to browse his work, talk with the artist and possibly even get a few pieces for your home.

Concerts @ Quadrangle: Help and Hope for Haiti

Many of us have waImage Sourced from EPA Orlando Barrlatched in horror as the stories of devastation and destruction continue to come out of Haiti, where a massive earthquake has completely rocked the country, bringing it to a literal standstill, with many people unable to connect with families, friends, and loved ones. To say that this destruction is heartbreaking is an understatement, and many of us have already stepped up to help by donating to local organizations or by texting to give to organizations such as the American Red Cross. For those of you who have been searching for a practical way to give, we would like to offer you some further options.

Option 1
We are partnering with local organization See the Need, Meet the Need and Hope for Haiti to airlift supplies to Haitian relief efforts. Hope for Haiti has been given two 757 airplanes and will be packing them full of supplies in the next several days and weeks to transport overseas. To learn more about Hope for Haiti, please feel free to visit their website at www.hopeforhaiti.com. On the site are a list of supplies that they are in desperate need of, and any donation would be appreciated. To make things easy for you, we will be collecting items at the next Concerts @ Quadrangle, THIS FRIDAY, January 22. There will be boxes throughout the gallery and concert space for you to drop off supplies, and we will get them to Hope for Haiti next week. Below are a few recommended items that can be easily purchased at your local grocery store. Of course, if you are in a profession that gives you access to other supplies (i.e. doctor, construction, etc.), feel free to donate those as well.

Neosporin

Hand sanitizer (large bottles)

Iodine salt

Gloves - All Sizes

Triple/Double A batteries

Antacids

Work gloves

Tums

Any children's Medications

Hydrogen Peroxide

Band-Aids (all sizes)

Option 2
Our artists are generously offering to donate a portion of the proceeds from their items sold to Haitian relief efforts. This is a great way to both add to your life while simultaneously changing the life of someone you may never meet. In addition, donation jars will be distributed throughout the room, as well as a portion of all bar tips being donated to relief efforts.

Ultimately, it isn't difficult to change the life of someone- even someone on the other side of the world that you may never meet. Join YnC and these great artists and organizations as we work together to send love, help, and hope to those so desperately in need of it right now.

Concerts @ Quadrangle: Soul Comes to Uptown

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! It was an absolutely amazing 2009 and we've definitely got you to thank for it. In 2009 we saw the start of Young and Cultured, the kickoff of Concerts @ Quadrangle, and the introduction of some of Dallas' most talented (and in some cases unheard of) artists to the city of Dallas. We can not thank you enough for how much you have supported the arts community in Dallas, and we're excited to be able to bring you even more music and great art in 2010.

So, 2010 is here and we're back in action, bringing you some of the best music that DFW has to offer. First up for this month is local soul artist Eric Tipton on January 22 at 8:13. Eric's from a small town in North Texas who was brought up on old-school soul and singers like Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway. By the age of 17, Eric was singing before crowds as they swooned to his soulful blend of soul and acoustic singer/songwriter melodies. When asked about his inspiration, Tipton says he writes "about love, life, and music."

In addition, we have the privilege of welcoming local artist, SAMO4PREZ to Studio 2717. SAMO4PREZ's work has been seen across Texas and around the world and is influenced by his many travels across the country and around the world. We're excited to be a part of continuing to showcase great artist's work right here at home, and this is one artist that we are thrilled to feature. SAMO4PREZ has been creating for 35 years on a plane of imaginary existence. Traveling the globe from the USA to Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Romania, Paris, Mexico, Thailand, Japan and his former home for a moment, China SAMO4PREZ is an artist, writer, designer, activist, philanthropist and neo-reformed movement-ist (he's also a wordsmith). SAMO4PREZ has shown his work in galleries from California (his place of birth) to his new home Texas and many places inbetween.

SAMO4PREZ is also known as Ty Clark and is the CEO/Founder/Designer for Veritas Fashion and is a member of the Veritas Artist Collective and 5D Artists Group.

Be sure to check out these amazing artists at www.myspace.com/erictipton and www.samo4prez.com
